Answers from Prof. Dr. Farhad Bakhtiary – Your FAQs answered competently!

Whether you are suitable for a minimally invasive/endoscopic procedure depends at first on your individual clinical condition. Secondly, the pre-operative investigations performed are also decisive. All patients will be well informed about the upcoming surgical technique in advance.

We treat all patients regardless of their origin and insurance status. If you do not have insurance in Germany, please contact the International Medical Service (IMS) at the University Hospital Bonn (Germany). They will send you a cost estimate for the planned pre-operative investigation, operation, and hospital stay.

We will of course be happy to give you a second opinion on the indication for surgery or the planned surgical technique and advise you in detail. Please make an appointment with us.

Patients are usually referred to our clinic by their cardiologist. If you would like to be operated on at our clinic and have been diagnosed, please make an appointment with us. The necessary pre-operative examinations will then be carried out and the best surgical option for you will be identified and discussed in detail with you.

Admission to the hospital usually occurs one day before the planned operation. Post-operatively, our patients usually spend one day at the intensive care unit. They then spend a further day on our intermediate care unit and usually three to four days on our normal care department. Discharge from our clinic usually occurs on the fifth postoperative day, either at home or in a rehabilitation center. The hospital stay usually takes six to seven days.

Once you have been discharged from our clinic, the follow-up care will be provided by your cardiologist. You are also welcome to contact our outpatient clinic for follow-up at any time. Please make an appointment for this purpose.

We are of course available anytime after the operation to answer any questions our patients may have. Please make an appointment with us.

Mechanical and biological (bovine/pig) heart valves are available at our center. The choice of the type of valve to be implanted depends on the patient's general condition, age, and wishes. In advance, we discuss in detail with the patient which valve is the most suitable for the surgery.
